MY ADDITUDE MOMENT
Stand by her: Don’t give up if a school stands you up about services.
STOCKBYTE/THINKSTOCK
“My daughter’s school refused to give her the accommodations in her 504 Plan.
The school district had lawyers and experts. Who was I to question them? I was lied to about
the process, my rights, and the school system’s responsibility. Behind my back, they called
me Mommacane, because I stormed the school and left a trail of damage a mile wide. I was
told to go back to baking cookies for the PTA. But I fought back, studied, learned the system,
asked questions, and did my research. After I made two formal complaints with the Department of Education, the school system gave in, followed the rules, and gave my daughter the
help she needed. She attends a new school now, and she gets everything in her 504 Plan,
every day. I am glad I went to ‘504 School.’” —A.J. Campbell
